What is Nutritional Therapy?
Since the time of Hipppocrates, there has been an awareness that food is critical in the creation and maintenance of good health. Our bodies and brains are made entirely from molecules derived from food, water and air. Everything we eat has an effect on our wellbeing. If our body does not get the nutrition it needs, our health can suffer and illness will follow.
Nutritional Therapy aims to encourage and support the body’s natural healing mechanisms through the holistic application of nutritional science. It treats the body as a whole and tries to identify the cause of a problem not just deal with the presenting symptoms.
How can Nutritional Therapy help you?
Optimum nutrition is giving yourself the best possible intake of nutrients to allow your body and brain to be as healthy as possible and to work as well as it can. Nutritional Therapy helps to correct nutritional deficiencies, resolve food intolerances and improve digestion – which is the key to good health. The aim is to identify how diet and lifestyle may be contributing to your presenting symptoms and ill health.
The initial consultation may take 1–1.5 hours where a thorough investigation of your medical history, dietary habits and preferences, family history and lifestyle is taken and evaluated, all in order to get a thorough picture of your health concerns, overall health, and nutritional status. Each person is different, so each treatment plan is individual and unique to that person.
You will then be offered individualized dietary and lifestyle information to help deal with your current health problems. With practical guidance including tasty tailor-made recipes and samples, you will learn how to incorporate a new, healthier way of eating into your life. Nutritional Therapy is about what you can eat, more than what you can’t. You will be surprised at the differences you can experience from making small improvements to your diet.

Before your first appointment you will be asked to complete a comprehensive and detailed questionnaire and keep a food diary for three days. These allow your nutritional therapist to identify your unique nutritional requirements and get a detailed picture of your health.
The initial consultation takes 1 to 1.5hrs and will focus on dietary habits, lifestyle, current and previous medication and your personal health history. Based on this, a detailed ‘plan of action’ will be worked out together. Recommendations may consist of dietary modifications and guidance on methods to support digestion and absorption of nutrients. They may also include the appropriate use of supplementary nutrients.
Most clients will experience an improvement in their symptoms within a few weeks. Follow up appointments take 30 to 60 minutes.
